About Us
Butts Barbershop is Wynnefield’s family barbershop: a place where men, women and children can sit back, relax and enjoy the craft of grooming in a setting that feels like home.
Our story
In 1983, William Butts’s mother and father opened a barbershop on North 54th Street with a simple idea: every person who sits in the chair should be treated like family. That idea built a following that spread the old-fashioned way, from parent to child and neighbor to neighbor.
In 2001 they handed the shop to their son. Will has kept it a family-owned business ever since, and that is what sets Butts apart from other shops in the area. It isn’t a franchise or a rotating cast of chairs. It’s a neighborhood institution with the same family name over the door.
Today the shop is serving its third generation. Grandfathers who sat here in the eighties now bring their grandsons for a first cut. Everyone gets an unhurried consultation, careful work and a hot-towel finish, and regulars get their usual without having to explain it.
More than a barber
Will’s work doesn’t stop at the shop door. He leads two of the neighborhood’s main civic groups and treats the shop as a place where young people can find guidance and their first job.
Every back-to-school season
Students start the school year with a fresh look. Will gives free haircuts and collects donations so kids head back to class with a free book bag.
Every Halloween
Will transforms the entire shop into a haunted house for the neighborhood’s kids. It has become one of Wynnefield’s favorite Halloween stops.
All year
Young people in the community find guidance, encouragement and work at the shop. For Will, investing in the next generation is part of the job.
What we stand for
Real barbering: straight razors, hot towels, fades blended by hand, and cuts done right the first time.
Family owned for two generations, and a family setting for men, women and children.
Since 1983 on the same block, passed from parents to son and still going strong.
Back-to-school haircuts, a haunted barbershop, and youth jobs. The shop belongs to the neighborhood.
Timeline
One family, one block, three generations of clients.
